MSRO was founded in 2022 when the president of MSRO attended the International Space University's Space Studies Program as the first Maldivian in the history of ISU and received incredible support from the 100+ in the cohort and the wider space community. Since then MSRO has been championing the voice of Maldives in space and the benefits of space in Maldives.

Since September 2024 MSRO is officially recognized and mandated to represent Maldives in all matters of space through a partnership with the Ministry of Defense.
